My sister just recently got a hamster. I owning three mice thought this would be an important topic to bring up. You CAN NOT. Put different types of rodents together. They can not share the same food (most cases), toys, or cage spaces. Most rodents DO NOT carry the same illnesses. For example a healthy hamster could be fine, but if we say one of my mice was exposed to it, it could catch something. We need to keep in mind they a different animals. Cats, dogs, ect. Can live happily in the same space. MOST rodents cannot. We also need to keep in mind if we are using the same food it needs to be separated from the two rodents. If you plan on re-using a cage set up, water bottle, food bowls, ect. Make sure to sterilze them. I can't stress this enough. Obviously if you're putting the same type of rodent it's fine. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do not share toys (even sterilized). Such as: Wheels, wooden toys, balls, chew toys, and more. I just though this was important to bring up.
Very informative post Almari.
I did not know this, but then I don't currently keep any rodents. Still nice to know though.
There may be other members out there who are considering raising rodents and this should provide some valuable information for them.
Always better to err on the side of caution in these cases. Thanks for posting!
Thank you. I figured if any rodent owners joined, or someone of here got a new pet it would help for the future. I know this information is useless to most of the users now. But I thought it'd be nice to post anyways.
